Within this illustration and its symbolism unlocks different levels of teaching associated with the month of Tamuz. Each image opens a door into the depth of what the Hebrew month teaches us. Below are a couple of descriptions of the symbols and their nature.
The Hand and Sword:
In the Hebrew alphabet, each letter possesses a numerical value and symbol associated with it. The Hebrew letter yud (י), whose numerical value is 10, symbolizes a hand, and the letter zayin (ז) value is 7, which represents a sword. The sword represents the ability to overcome and holds up the scales of fate. The 17th is for the 17th of Tamuz, a day of great significance for though it marks a time in our history of the destruction of the 2nd temple and scattering of our people, in our tradition, we learn that on this date, the scales of choice will turn, and there will be no more mourning, but a time of great joy.
The Scales:
In the center of the scales is the Sartan (crab), the zodiac symbol Cancer that rules over the month of Tamuz. A floral pattern of mandrakes adorns the scales, a symbol for the Tribe of Reuven, again associated with the month. The scales represent our daily choices, either to choose life or of sin (death). The pasuk (verse) around the illustration is a call from Hashem to us, "I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day: I have put before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life—if you and your offspring would live" (Deuteronomy 30:19).
